We are just being approached by AltaLink to have trasmission lines built on our property in Alberta, Canada. I am quickly trying to get legitimate concerns for our consultation with them. Bottom line again for the land owner, it is a ugly position to be in. Do we have any rights at all???

I loved the “truth” guy claiming a California study shows a correlation between EMF and SUICIDE!

Hahahaha! That totally discredits the entire sutdy and “Truth” himself. What a riot.

To those of you who disagree with the FACT that powerlines cause health concerns, you need to do your research a little better next time. Do oyu live near HV powerlines? I hope you do! Then again, maybe that is why your brain does not work? You claim there is no direct evidence, but show no research the proves otherwise.
Also to Truth, I think it is quite funny you wrote, “MOST homes.” Ha! So you sya that some do?

Posting anonymously for obvious reasons. Viviane’s response is typical of ignorant parents and adults in the United States. Like many other studies there is a weak correlation between electromagnetic frequencies and high power transmissions lines. There are a few things you should remember about such ignorant fears:

1. In case you don’t remember from your high school statistics class correlation does not equal causation.

2. Your house is filled with electromagnetic fields. Electricity creates a magnetic field that passes right though the rubber insulation on every wire. Don’t believe me? Take some iron filing and dump it over a wire and watch the Gauss fields appear.

3. Go outside and look at that bright shining orb in the sky. Do you realize what type of radiation is being dumped on us DAILY from the sun? The amount of radiation (yes visible light is radiation) is enough to give you cancer. The amount of radiation that is outputted from the Sun is many times over more powerful than the radiation emitted from your cell phone or high power transmission lines. Again the sun’s emitted radiation bleeds into nearly known band of radiation.

So in closing, the next time you make needless decisions based on information vetted to you from fear based media sources contact a doctor or another expert from your local University. And no your best friend’s-sister – mother who knows someone who felt crappy and moved away from power lines who now feels better does not count.

I wanted to ask this question of Cindy Sage — I know there is a lot of controversy around safe exposure to EMF but as a general rule of thumb what distance away from the high voltage transmission power lines can be considered safe? I have young children and am thinking of buying in the area. Also the powerlines that run along 280 – are they also high high voltage power lines?

To: The “real” Truth
150 feet from a High Voltage transmission line is not, in fact, a “safe” distance nor does it show a considerable drop in the mG reading at the front door of a persons home. The number you may be referring to is 150 metres away from High Voltage transmission lines, since highly elevated levels are foud 50 metres, 100 metres and 150 metres away in decreasing strength. That translates into 450 ft (roughly).

Cindy Sage’s comment above is very useful as the Bioinitiative Report’s first chapter illuminates the issues surrounding EMF. Another good source of information is that produced by the Bonneville Power Administration in 1996- while dated it covered an enormous amount of information and is well worth looking at.

Children can be in fatal car accidents, or stung by bees, or cut a finger off in a lawn mower. that is why we try to protect them from these by teaching safety rules, locking the shed, using seatbelts. EMF is invisible, penetrates walls, and can be making your child sick without a cure and without knowing what is hurting them. That is why safety measures need to be put into place.
