Many real estate agents and their buyers use Google Street Views to preview real estate prior to visiting it. For you “off street” enthusiasts, Google has mounted a tricycle with it’s Street View camera and is looking for off road sites worthy of showcasing. So far they have collected imagery of Legoland in Southern California, San Diego State University, the Santa Monica Pier and the Monterey Bay Bike Trail.

If you have a favorite “off street” location that you think is worth exploring, you can make submissions here.

I submitted a recommendation for the Street Views trike to visit Rancho San Antonio. Can you see Google’s cyclist climbing up the PG&E trail? On the other-hand maybe walking the trike will work as well.

I just received a request for instructions on how to get to the Black Mountain Hiking trail head on my plugoo instant messaging.

From Interstate 280 in Santa Clara County, exit #16 El Monte/Moody Road and drive west on Moody Road. Go straight through the stoplight at Foothill College, and at a stop sign at about 0.6 mile, turn left to remain on Moody. Drive about 0.5 mile more on Moody, then turn left onto Rhus Ridge Road. Drive about 0.2 mile on this narrow road, then bear right into the parking lot.

This trailhead has parking for about 12 cars; no parking on Rhus Ridge Road. No entrance or parking fees. No toilet facilities or drinking water. No designated handicapped parking, and trails are poorly suited to wheelchairs. Maps available at information signboard.

The following is a link that describes the hike:

Mile:
0.0: Begin at the gated entrance to Rhus Ridge Trail.
0.5: Path departs on the left. Continue straight on Rhus Ridge Trail.
0.9: Crest and junction. Turn right onto Black Mountain Trail.
1.6: Junction with path to Hidden Villa. Continue straight on Black Mountain Trail.
1.8: Second junction with path to Hidden Villa, on the right. Continue straight on Black Mountain Trail.
3.4: Near a high-tension power line, the narrow path widens to a fire road and begins a steep, relentless climb.
4.5: Gate.
4.5: Junction. Turn right.
4.6: Junction. Turn left onto Monte Bello Road.
4.7: Hilltop. Turn right onto an unsigned path, and head a few feet to a rocky viewpoint.
4.7: Turn-around point.
9.4: Back at the trailhead.

Sorry I couldn’t respond directly, I was on another call.

With this great weather, it was time to get out and enjoy the beauty of our area. One of the nicest hiking areas around is located in the western foothills at Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve. One of my favorite hikes is the PG&E Trail otherwise known as the power poles trail. The total hike is slightly over <strike>4</strike> 5-ish miles from the valley, it has an elevation gain of over 600 feet. It is a great hike that rewards hikers with great views of the bay area and the western foothills.

Begin your hike by heading south from the main parking lot towards the equestrian parking area. Turn right, cross over a small foot bridge and the climb begins. As you walk, the western views will become better and better. About 10 minutes into the hike, there is a three-way trail head. Take the far left trail (the one heading uphill). A hundred yards ahead will be a fence that prevents bikes from proceeding further. Go through the gate and continue further. Eventually the first high voltage transmission line will come into view. Continue along the fire-trail, following the path of the transmission lines.

The trail is mostly uphill until you reach power line #3. At approximately 625 feet of elevation (from the valley floor), this is the highest point on this hike. Note, you can follow the power lines much further up the mountain but on this hike, I suggest heading back to the valley. The trail goes downhill for the next three power lines. At power line #6, there will be a trail to the right, that heads downhill. Take it for about 150 yards where it will connect with the Wildcat Loop Trail (turn right) that takes you back to the Dear Hollow Farm.

Once at the farm, follow everyone else one mile back to the parking lot. You will pass the tennis courts and the Giant California Bay tree. I would allow approximately 1.5 hours for the hike. Make sure you bring water, a snack, layered clothing and maybe a camera.
